Training and fighting out of Scottsbluff Nebraska, Joey Munoz has won two fights in a month’s time and is looking to make it three on Saturday night at Universal Fight Alliance 4 in Casper Wyoming. He will take on Steven Overshiner for the UFA lightweight title.
FF: Tell us a little bit about yourself.
JM: I got into MMA through a friend and have been sticking to it ever since then and it’s gotten me to where I am now. I was pretty short for 170 so everyone convinced me to go to 155. Physically I feel much better than I did at 170. I feel faster, stronger, and smoother in my transitions. This will be my first fight at 155 but in training and practice I feel off the charts.
FF: What are you working on specifically for your fight for the title against Overshiner?
JM: I’ve been working on a lot of take down defense and Jiu Jitsu from my back because I’ve noticed how he likes taking guys down. His last opponent (Matt Peckham) was actually one of my teammates and he took him down a lot so I’ve been working on getting off my back and trying to stand up more. He trains at Saturn so I figure he’s probably a wrestler.
FF: Overshiner also appeared to gas out in his last fight…
JM: Yeah that’s going to be a big factor because my conditioning is off the charts right now and if his conditioning is anywhere near where it was his last fight, then, I don’t think it’ll last too long.
FF: So do you have a strategy to execute?
JM: Yeah so far it’s to come out and stand up with him, out condition him, and as soon as he gets tired just capitalize and finish him.
FF: Is stand up your strong suit as a fighter then?
JM: I’d say it’s actually my Jiu Jitsu at the moment because that’s what we’ve been focussing on.
FF: How long have you been training?
JM: Since June of 2010.
FF: Wow, I’ve got to compliment you, you’ve been pretty impressive for being that fresh to it.
JM: Thank you man.
FF: And you’ve been pretty active. You won a unanimous three round decision against Trevor Fritzler on July 30th, turned around and got a third round finish over Cruz Soltero on August 5th and now you’re fighting once again on August 27th…
JM: Yeah, they called me the Thursday before the (Fritzler) fight and asked me to take the (Soltero) fight. I let them know that if I didn’t get hurt I’d like to take the fight and once I beat Fritzler without an injury I told them it was on for the 5th.
FF: Where do you train?
JM: Final Round Fitness in Scottsbluff Nebraska. Since I’ve been training, there haven’t been any (MMA events) in Nebraska so I fight in Wyoming and Denver.
FF: What are your future MMA plans?
JM: I want to build my record and whenever my trainer Chris Saucado thinks I’m ready I want to go pro. That’s my main goal right now. That would be a dream come true right there.
FF: So if you become the UFA champion who do you want to defend against?
JM: Well I can’t really say but if I had to it would be Justin Glenn because fought him before and I won that fight on an injury so I’d like to get a reshot at that one.
FF: Nice. Well thanks for talking and definitely good luck.
JM: Alright thank you.
