Jon Jones makes his prediction for Daniel Cormier vs. Stipe Miocic 2 at UFC 241

UFC heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier will attempt to make the second defense of his title in August when he meets Stipe Miocic in a rematch at UFC 241 from Anaheim.

Cormier got the better of Miocic in their first fight last July when he knocked out the Ohio native in the first round to claim the heavyweight title.

Now Cormier will look to repeat his performance while Miocic attempts to get redemption after he was the longest reigning heavyweight champion in UFC history.

Reigning UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has a long history with Cormier as one of the most heated rivalries in the history of the sport but he’s also gone to battle with him on two different occasions inside the Octagon.

Jones may never tout Cormier as his favorite person but he knows the athleticism and power that the two-time Olympic wrestler brings into the cage with him. That’s why Jones still favors Cormier to retain his title and turn back Miocic in his attempt at redemption in August.

“I think Stipe will put up a better fight but I do think DC will win again,” Jones told UFC color commentator Dan Hardy recently. “DC’s an extraordinary athlete. His flexibility and his speed for the way he’s built doesn’t make sense. Even his endurance for the way he’s built. He’s a special athlete.

“I don’t think most guys would beat DC. I think the way to beat DC is to catch him with a knockout shot, which Stipe has the power to do. Question is can he land it? I think DC’s smart and he’s going to use his wrestling wit and find a way to win again and then he’ll retire or fight at heavyweight again.”

Cormier has said adamantly that he only has a couple of fights left in his career before he retires but he has mentioned the possibility of returning to light heavyweight if he ever had the chance to avenge his prior loss to Jones.

For his part, Jones doesn’t see Cormier ever making that weight cut again, especially knowing that he would be a massive underdog in a third fight between the two of them.

“He’s definitely never coming back to light heavyweight. He says it but there’s no way he’s coming to light heavyweight,” Jones said. “To commit your life to lose that type of weight and to come up short again would be so devastating.

“It would take an incredible amount of courage to attempt it and to come up short would just be so devastating. I doubt he’d put himself through that for the third time.”

Max Holloway vs. Frankie Edgar in the works for UFC 240 in July

Featherweight champion Max Holloway is wasting no time getting to work in his own division as he’s expected to face Frankie Edgar on July 27 at UFC 240 from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Sources close to the contest confirmed that verbal agreements are in place for the championship fight scheduled for July. ESPN initially announced the news.

Holloway and Edgar have been matched up twice previously with the fight falling apart on both occasions due to injury. The first instance was Edgar dropping out of the contest and the second time was Holloway suffering an injury that delayed the fight taking place.

Now Holloway and Edgar will try to make the fight happen for the third time with the matchup now expected for UFC 240 in July.

Holloway is coming off his first loss in nearly six years after he moved to lightweight and fell short in his bid to capture the interim championship in a fight against Dustin Poirier in April.

Prior to that loss, Holloway had won 13 straight including two defenses of his featherweight title.

As for Edgar, the former lightweight champion turned featherweight contender has been champing at the bit for a shot at Holloway ever since their last meeting was cancelled.

Edgar is coming off a decision win over Cub Swanson in his last fight with a 3-1 record over his past four outings overall. Edgar has been a stalwart at the top of the featherweight rankings ever since he dropped down to 145 pounds but he’s come up short in two previous bids to become champion.

Now Edgar will attempt to become a two-division champion when he faces Holloway in July as part of the upcoming UFC 240 card expected for Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Neil Magny out of UFC Rochester co-main event, Vicente Luque awaits replacement

The UFC Fight Night card this weekend in Rochester, New York took an unexpected hit on Monday as co-main event fighter Neil Magny was forced off the card for undisclosed reasons.

UFC officials confirmed the news on Monday following an initial report from MMAJunkie.

While there were no details available about Magny’s exit from the card, it leaves a gaping hole in the co-main event with Vicente Luque now awaiting word on a new opponent.

The UFC is searching for a replacement to step in on six days notice to face Luque on Saturday night but as of now no opponent has been found.

Luque was looking to build on his four-fight win streak including a ‘Fight of the Night’ performance in his last outing against Bryan Barberena.

Now he’ll have to wait on word from the UFC to see if he will get a replacement opponent for Saturday or potentially get pushed back to a later date.

Ronda Rousey explains why UFC debut was bigger than headlining WWE’s Wrestlemania

(Courtesy of UFC)

Though she has followed in her mother’s footsteps to some degree, for Ronda Rousey, that has meant forging her own path.

While Rousey, like her mother before her, became one of the top Judoka’s in the world, earning a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Unlike her mother, Rousey took her skills in Judo and transferred them to a career in mixed martial arts. Though there were many women that began paving the road before her, Rousey was the woman that opened the floodgates for women to succeed at the highest levels of the sport.

She was the first ever UFC women’s champion and remained undefeated for years.

But even after Rousey finally lost in the cage, she wasn’t done punching through the ceiling for women.

A longtime professional wrestling fan, Rousey inked a deal with WWE and quickly went from a new woman on the roster to headlining the promotion’s biggest event of the year, Wrestlemania.

But even though Wrestlemania was the biggest venue and the biggest audience for which Rousey has ever performed, it wasn’t the biggest moment in Rousey’s career. That place is still held by her UFC debut opposite Liz Carmouche.

TRENDING Rose Namajunas uncertain about her future following loss at UFC 237

Listen to Rousey in this extended interview with the UFC’s Megan Olivi, as she took a look back at the path that has delivered her to where she’s at today, what else she has going on now that she’s taking a step back from the UFC and WWE, and what’s next.
