We had the chance to speak with main event fighter of Fridays RMBB card, Alfredo Corona. who is ack in the cage and looking for a win.
FF: Hey Alfredo, I’m looking forward to seeing you fight again.
AC: Thanks man. Yeah, I’m excited too. It’s going to be another good fight. My last fight didn’t go my way but I had a couple things going on personally and I was trying to figure everything out with the fight…But now I’m back on track and got the ball rollin’ and kinda goin’ from there so…
FF: It’s been about six months since your fight at F2W, what have you been up to?
AC: Just training real hard…the nutrition was part of the key to the last fight, my diet wasn’t quite where it needed to be, even in pictures side-by-side I look a little bloated but, nutrition is the key. I just needed to stay with it and this diet is doing really good for me so…
FF: A lot of us thought it was a ballsy fight for you going against Josh Ford, a Jiu Jitsu black belt when you, at the time, were a Jiu Jitsu purple belt. He submitted you with two seconds to go in round 1, and your next fight back you’re fighting Daniel Aguilar, another black belt. What’s your thought process there?
AC: The difference between this fight and that fight is this guy is from Brazil, he trains with a lot of the top guys that are pro champions, there are a lot of guys over there at his gym, he knows everything on the ground when it comes to Jiu Jitsu, but it all plays out to if he can’t grab me, he can’t hurt me.
FF: So you are planning to keep the fight standing and use other disciplines besides Jiu Jitsu.
AC: Yeah, I’m going to keep the fight standing and keep him out of where he’s comfortable. I’m going to take him out of his element and put him in my element. And use my game plan to take him out.
FF: Wasn’t that your plan against Ford though?
AC: My plan against Ford was a little different because he’s more of an aggressive grappler. Daniel is more or less my style when it come to Jiu Jitsu because it’s more flowing into it. Josh more or less wants to take the guy to the ground and bang a little bit with it. So, like I said, I’m planning to keep this fight standing and keep him on his toes…moving around, so…
FF: Are you saying it’s Aguilar’s actual Jiu Jitsu style that is going to allow you to defend his take downs better than you were able to defend Ford’s?
AC: His style’s going to be, like I said, not as aggressive. Not saying he’s going to just sit there and let the fight come to him, I’m just going to take the fight to him and work him over for it. I don’t proclaim to be the best fighter but I am a proficient enough fighter to hold my own so if I can fight another good fighter and go at it then I’m going to do it.
FF: I know you study the game and you study your opponents, I take it you know a little about Aguilar?
AC: Yeah it was pretty hard to look him up but I found some stuff and just from that I kind of got an understanding of where he is..You can see the difference between a fighter and a grappler and he’s more or less the grappling aspect of it. Like I said, that’s more or less where his world is and so I want to take him out of that and put him into my world which is MMA and let him know this is what fighting is, this isn’t Jiu Jitsu, this isn’t grappling, this is fighting.
FF: Dude, you just made me wish the fight was right now.
AC: Yeah, ever since I had to watch that (Josh Ford) fight over and over and see what I did wrong, it was just simple mistakes that I made. It wasn’t anything too technical that I did, I just got in bad positions got disoriented and that’s what happened. I transitioned out of one arm bar and fell into another.
FF: What would you say is the biggest thing you learned then from that fight?
AC: Even though some guys don’t like to watch when they lose, I have to look at the fight to see what I did wrong and it’s just minor details. It’s stuff that you forget, you know your heart’s going so fast and you’re always thinking, “What’s the next move?” That’s why you have to listen to your corner and your coaches. If you don’t listen to those guys, you’re dead in the water.
FF: After this fight do you plan to stay on more or less the same schedule?
AC: I want to stay more active. I love to fight. There’s not much I can say other than I love to go out there and perform well and put on a good show.
FF: And you’re making your return to RMBB where you held three amateur titles, how’s it going to feel to step back into that cage?
AC: I’m excited man, I’m ready to go out and put on another good show.
FF: Sweet. Looking forward to Friday night. You mentioned you picked up a new sponsor did you want to mention them now?
AC: Yes. It’s called Nutrition Zone. I’d also like to thank my chiropractor Dr. Josh Vickers and my massage therapist Corey Zalewski.
FF: Okay man, well good luck and thanks for talking.
AC: No problem.
