Henry Cejudo: ‘I’m the face of the UFC now’

Though he doesn’t think so, it may be a tad bit premature to elevate Henry Cejudo to the status of greatest combat sports athlete in history.

Cejudo makes a strong case after adding the bantamweight belt to his collection on Saturday night at UFC 238 in Chicago. He is now only the fourth athlete to ever hold UFC title belts in two weight classes simultaneously. Cejudo is also the flyweight champion. One thing that sets him apart from anyone else on the planet is, in addition to being a UFC dual-division champion, he also has an Olympic Gold Medal in wrestling.

Though Cejudo was quick to proclaim himself the greatest of all time after defeating Marlon Moraes, he wasn’t quick to rest on his laurels. Though he has some injuries to overcome, he wants to continue fighting the top names in the world.

Cejudo already has victories over the likes of Demetrious Johnson and TJ Dillashaw, but wants go on a legends rampage, calling out the likes of Dominick Cruz, Urijah Faber, and Cody Garbrandt.

“I want big fights. I’m on a legend rampage. That’s what I want. I’m a legend killer. I want big fights. Dominick Cruz, you guys wouldn’t like Dominick Cruz versus Henry Cejudo? Doesn’t that sound exciting?” Cejudo said at the UFC 238 post-fight press conference.

But before he lands a fight with his next “legend,” Cejudo wants to land a whopper of a contract, insisting he needs to meet with UFC president Dana White to discuss his future with the company.

“I need to meet with Dana White, too. I need a meeting with him because I need heavyweight money. I feel like I’m the face of the UFC now and I want to get paid like one and Dana has been great to me. He’s been really good. I have nothing bad to say, but I want to make heavyweight money. I want to change this game.”

Henry Cejudo claims bonus in becoming champ-champ at UFC 238 (bonuses & attendance)

UFC 238 was billed as a top heavy card, built largely around the three bouts that closed out the pay-per-view. All three of those fights delivered.

Henry Cejudo claimed a Performance of the Night bonus at UFC 238 with the effort in his bout with Marlon Moraes in the main event. Cejudo was already the flyweight champion coming into the fight, but had to overcome a difficult first round to storm back and finish the fight late in the third frame.

Not only did Cejudo earn a $50,000 bonus, he also became the UFC’s fourth fighter in history to hold two belts in two different divisions at the same time.

UFC 238 co-main event winner Valentina Shevchenko also earned a $50,000 performance bonus for her spectacular knockout of Jessica Eye. It was Shevchenko’s first defense of her flyweight title, but she put a stamp on the belt with her spectacular head-kick knockout 26 seconds into round two.

Fight of the Night honors went to Tony Ferguson and Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone, who fought a hard-nosed scrabble, but the ending was less than satisfactory. Ferguson lit Cerrone up a good bit in round two, but landed a shot that landed just after the bell.

In between rounds, Cerrone blew his nose and his eye swelled shut. The cageside doctor examined him and determined the fight should not continue. Officials reviewed the ending, but determined that the late punch did not determine the ending of the fight. Ferguson was awarded the victory and both men walked away with a $50,000 bonus.

The UFC 238 lightweight contenders bout between former interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson and No. 4 ranked Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone on Saturday in Chicago didn’t go the way anyone expected, even Ferguson.

The bout had major implications in the 155-pound division with the winner likely getting a title shot in their next outing. The two wasted no time mixing it up in the opening round.

In the second frame, Ferguson continued to apply constant pressure. He peppered Cerrone with jabs and kicks to the body. Ferguson began to take over the fight and Cerrone’s face showed the damage. At the end of the round, Ferguson landed a right hand after the bell. He received a strong warning from the referee. Before the third frame, Cerrone blew his nose causing his right eye to completely swell closed. The doctor was called into the cage and determined that Cerrone couldn’t continue.

It was a bizarre ending to the fight. The athletic commission reviewed a replay of the ending of the round and determined that the punch after the bell didn’t cause Cerrone’s eye to swell closed. Ferguson was declared the winner by doctor stoppage.

UFC 238: Cejudo vs. Moraes is set for Saturday night in Chicago with a fight card that is tipping over at the top end. There are two title fights and a pivotal lightweight contenders bout that will help set the course for the remainder of the year in the division.

UFC flyweight champion Henry Cejudo and bantamweight contender Marlon Moraes headline the UFC 238 fight card in a battle for the bantamweight championship that was recently vacated by TJ Dillashaw, who is currently under suspension for an anti-doping policy violation.

A second title fight fills the UFC 238 co-main event slot, as women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko puts her belt on the line for the first time. She squares off with Jessica Eye, who is undefeated since returning to the 125-pound weight class three fights ago.

The bout that has generated the lion’s share of interest is the lightweight contenders bout between former interim champion Tony Ferguson and Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone. Their bout should determine the next lightweight challenger, as champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and interim titleholder Dustin Poirier unify their titles at UFC 242 on Sept. 7 in Abu Dhabi.

Those two bouts should set the path for the UFC lightweight championship picture for the remainder of the year and are expected to help determine Conor McGregor’s next opponent once he returns to the Octagon.
